Up to the 20th century, the Moated Castle and the agricultural area around Seebach was owned by the von Berlepsch family.
The captain of the Wartburg Castle Hans von Berlepsch, protector of Martin Luther, bought the Moated Castle in 1523. During the Peasant's War the castle and the village were looted.
In the 19th century the Barons von Berlepsch occupied themselves with fruit cultivation and bee-keeping. They also committed themselves to the protection of birds.
The Moated Castle became a state-run experimental bird protection center in 1908. It is the oldest institute for bird protection in Germany.
