In Muehlhausen you walk in the footsteps of the Peasants' War Leader Thomas Muentzer and the composer Johann Sebastian Bach ...

Muehlhausen was once an important free imperial town and part of the Hansa alliance.

You get the best view on the medieval town center from the 13th century town wall

9 of 17 medieval churches and chapels have been preserved.

Two churches dominate the town, both built at the same time by the German Order of Knighthood: The Divii Blasii church was built next to a Romanesque building, the Marien church was erected at the site of an older Romanesque church - all in Gothic style.

The citizens of Muehlhausen chose Thomas Muentzer as the pastor of the Marien church. Here, in 1525, he presented the Rainbow Flag to the citizens as a "sign of eternal alliance". The Rainbow Flag became the symbol of the peasants' uprising. And here, in the same year, the victorious territorial princes celebrated a mass.

You find the Gothic arches of the Muehlhausen churches on one of the landmarks of New York: 50 young Muehlhausen citizens emigrated to the USA in 1831, amongst them the engineer Johann August Roebling. Johann August Roebling, followed by his son Washington Roebling and finally by his daughter in law Emily Warren Roebling, designed and built New York's Brooklyn Bridge.
